Romans 7: A Description of Myself

I was once having a conversation with someone, soon after I was converted which was during a difficult stage in my Christian walk. I was trying to explain my daily battle with sin, but I couldn’t put it into adequate words. Fortunately, the person I was talking to put it into words for me!  “You mean, like in Romans 7?”

Of course, not having a very good memory for Bible verses and such things, I had to go as soon as I could to look it up and find out for myself what the verse said. And the Lord really used the words to work in my heart. Ever since then, I have felt that this is a perfect description of myself. While it demonstrates the true nature of our hearts, it also gives us lots of hope that we must be trusting in Christ to help us fight our sinful natures. I hope the Lord will use this to work in your life as He used it to work in mine (I have used the ESV translation and only parts of this passage, so for the full effect of theses verses, find it in the Bible!):

Romans 7:15-24 (ESV)
“. . .  For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate . . . For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”
I pray that the Lord would bless you all, on this His day!
